Infants / Key Stage 1
Children move into our Infant Department (Key Stage 1) at the end of their Reception year and spend a year in Year 1 (aged 5 turning 6) and a year in Year 2 (aged 6 turning 7) before moving on to our Junior Department (Key Stage 2).
The school day runs from 8.30am to 3.20pm. The Key Stage 1 curriculum includes the following subjects:
- Art and Design
- Design and Technology
- Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
- Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE).
The curriculum is approached through whole school themes and a cross-curricular approach is adopted as much as possible. Examples of recent themes include:
- Let's Remember: Britain 1900-1930 (including the nation’s focus on the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War)
- Ice and Fire
- Britain as a Maritime Nation
- Who we Are
- The Tudors
- Air and Water
- Road to Rio
Our Infants perform a Nativity at Christmas and take part in the whole school Carol Service. They also take a class assembly each term.
Swimming is a weekly activity and there is an increased choice of extra-curricular activities, mainly offered at lunchtime.
The Reading Buddy system continues throughout the school and the children forge strong friendships across year groups, which are further enhanced by the House system. We have 3 Houses: Brunel, Cabot and Hannah More—and all children are allocated a House when they start in Nursery. Competitions take place throughout the year, including Sports Day in the summer term.
Our classes are small, offering the opportunity to ensure that our children receive individual attention and teachers are able to structure their planning and delivery of the curriculum to ensure that every child has areas of focus and development which are specific to their needs. Communication between home and school is open, regular and timely.
The curriculum is enhanced by an extensive programme of trips and visiting speakers and drama groups; we welcome the Bristol Old Vic each year, for example, to perform their version of the Nativity.

A combination of formative and summative assessment is used to track children's progress throughout the school.
