We passionately believe that if a child feels happy and secure, they will develop confidence, high levels of self-belief and self-esteem and thoroughly enjoy their primary years. Giving them the gift of a memorable and happy primary education is priceless and will shape their attitude to future learning. No child goes unnoticed at Fairfield and many of our alumni return to us many years after leaving, either to carry out work experience, or to tell us how happy they were at Fairfield, or to let us know how they have used the gifts and talents they discovered whilst pupils here.
We offer a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum and adopt a cross-curricular approach delivering our curriculum through themes. Recent whole school themes are:
- Let's Remember: Britain 1900-1930 (including the nation’s focus on the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War)
- Ice and Fire
- Britain as a Maritime Nation
- Who we Are
- The Tudors
- Air and Water
- Road to Rio
A new computer suite of 21 networked computers was installed in August 2013. In addition, all classrooms have a computer; every computer in the building is networked and has access to broadband. Interactive whiteboards have been installed in all classrooms.
French, Spanish and Latin are introduced in the Junior Department (Key Stage 2) and drama takes the form of productions, concerts and assemblies for all year groups, including Nursery. Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is an important element of the whole curriculum.
Our curriculum is further enriched by a very wide variety of events such as class visits and visiting speakers, to help pupils understand more about themselves and the society in which they live. Theatre and music groups also come into school and we offer a very wide programme of extra-curricular activities.
Whilst our curriculum is closely informed by the New National Curriculum 2014, we determine from a very early age to foster enjoyment of learning as an active and enjoyable process.
Children are encouraged to question and to reason and we aim to provide opportunities for each child to achieve his or her potential through a broad, stimulating, dynamic and differentiated curriculum. At the end of their time at Fairfield, we hope that each child will take away with them:
- A sense of academic fulfilment
- The social skills necessary to relate to, and work successfully with, other people
- The skills to be able to cope with future challenges
- Interests that will give them personal satisfaction in the use of leisure time
- Communication skills
- An awareness of local, national and international issues.
We do not recognise a divide between the curriculum and pastoral care.
Classes in the Infant and Junior Departments (Key Stages 1 and 2) usually contain up to 20 children per class; our commitment to small class sizes reflects our aim of nurturing and developing the potential of each child. Early Years Foundation Stage children are fully integrated into the main school and have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities and clubs.
We have high expectations of the children; progress is carefully monitored and the results are shared regularly with parents. We believe that learning is a partnership between child, teacher and parent. Our teachers are committed, inspirational and enthusiastic.
